Our study reviews the application of remote sensing to management of the land cover in the south western Gabon which includes the Gabonese lagoon coast. Remotely sensed data are used for the coastal and terrestrial geotope or habitat characterisation and mapping. While these applications clearly cover most of the range of opportunities for use of remotely sensed data in both the coastal and terrestrial area, there is still a need for more simple and inexpensive complete baseline studies of natural resources and habitats, and characterisation of the anthropic impact on the environment of south-western Gabon. There is also a requirement for more management-oriented / application studies of the available datasets. Integration of information between management agencies and research groups is also an important aspect of management of the south-western Gabonese environment and its coastal ecosystem.
