ABSTRACT

BEAM is an application suite which facilitates the utilisation, viewing and processing of the Envisat MERIS, (A)ATSR, ASAR and MODIS data products. The software is being developed by Brockmann Consult GmbH under contract of ESA. Continued as an open source project, BEAM has become the most used, freely available software used throughout the Envisat scientific user community.

This exercise will introduce to the VISAT software which is the VISualization, Analysing and processing Tool of BEAM. Basic functions, such as image display, colour palettes, using the bit-masks, statistical analysis, export and import or projection of images will be introduced. The exercise will also give a short introduction into the MERIS product structure. The introduced functions will be applied in a concrete example.

BEAM can be downloaded from Envisat home page (http://envisat.esa.int/services/beam).
